Ash Green Scout Group

Thinking of becoming a Leader?

What you might like to know! (Also see the FAQ's on becoming a leader)

Ash Green Scout Group is part of the Swanley Scout District, in the Scout County of Kent. It is the largest Scout Group in Swanley District, and it is believed that it is also the largest in Kent. The Group currently provides Scouting to over 90 young people, across an age range of 6 to 14.

The Group consists of two Beaver (age 6-8) Colonies, two Cub Packs (age 8-101/2), two Scout Troops (101/2 -14). An Explorer Unit (age 14-18) is also attached to the Group.

The Group also has a constant Waiting List of about 55 young people who want to join when places become available, but we cannot expand further, due to the lack of available suitable premises.

Young people (or their parents/Guardians!!) pay monthly subscriptions to the Group. The monthly subscriptions help finance the on-going weekly activities of the Sections and help pay for the insurance cover on each member of the Group. The annual insurance cover for young people in the Group amounts to more than £7,000!

We have a good level of equipment which is regularly checked for safety and condition. The Group policy is to continually add to that equipment, and assess the condition of existing equipment, replacing items as necessary. Some of that equipment is specialist: Air Rifles, Archery equipment and Tomahawks in particular - and you will need a Scout Permit to use those. As a leader, you can train for the relevant permits.

The Group has a van. If you are a leader and are over the age of 21, you can drive the Group Van (it is NOT a Minibus). You must hold a FULL UK car driving licence to do so. The Group covers ALL costs relating to Scout Group use of the van, including fuel, insurance, breakdown cover, Dartford Crossing tolls etc. You need to let the GSL (Group Scout Leader) see your driving licence and also fully disclose any accidents and convictions you may have had.

The Group has a comprehensive 'Policies Document' which parents and guardians are encouraged to download and read. The Policies Document is reviewed and updated regularly. A copy of the Policies Document can be obtained here: at www.ashgreenscouts.org.uk/spage-information_on_ash_green_scouts-welcome_pack62.html

The Group Scout Leader has overall responsibility for the Group. The current Group Scout Leader is Peter Lewis and he can be contacted by email: gsl@ashgreenscouts.org.uk
