  • Why I enjoy volunteering

    1st June 2015

I work in marketing and public relations and spend most of my day on the telephone to some pretty hard bitten marketeers and cynical journalists. I love my job but there are days when I am totally shattered and 'not in a good place'.

That's when I enjoy volunteering the most, because no matter how bad your day you get a real buzz out of helping young people enjoy the fun and adventure that is Scouting. The sheer enjoyment they get out of activities such as camping, wide games, lighting fires and cooking will lift even the most jaded spirits.

And the pleasure they get when they are awarded a new badge and the pride they show really does make it all worthwhile.

They work in the community raising funds for charity, they learn first aid and emergency procedures, they've been to the Menin Gate to learn about sacrifice - they are a terrific bunch of young people, all 132 of them.

I'm proud to be part of the leader team that makes such a difference to the young people of New Ash Green.
