What happens at a typical meeting?
Each Section meets weekly. We have two types of meeting - indoors and outdoors. Outdoor meetings consist of activities such as raft building, canoeing, pioneering, orienteering, archery, abseiling, karting, cooking, survival camping and wide games.
In addtion we also have outings, sleepovers, hikes, camps and other activities that take place at the weekends or during holiday time. However, the mainstay of our programme is the weekly meeting.
The vast majority of weekly Beaver meetings take place indoors because of their age but Cubs and Scouts do get out and about more. Naturally, outdoor meetings tend to take place more often in the Spring and Summer.
We use the winter months primarily for indoor activities and for training the young people for camps and take them through the various badge courses they do.
A typical indoor evening will follow roughly the same format for all three Sections. This is a Scout night although Beavers and Cubs are very similar:
7:30pm Flag/Inspection
7:40pm Game
8.00pm Patrol Work
8:20pm Game
8:25pm Badge Work
8:45pm Game
8.55pm Game
9.10pm Patrols/Notices/Flag Down/Dismiss
Games can be physical, creative, mental and are also used as training aids. The "work" sections are where we teach them new skills and the follow up games are usually devised to reinforce what they have learnt.
You'll play a full part in all meetings, giving you the opportunity to run games, teach new skills and help with administration and 'crowd control'.
We also take them ten pin bowling, skateboarding, ice-skating, swimming, we have games nights with other Groups - all-in-all a varied programme.
Then as the good days approach it's out and about. We have our own minibus, so there are lots of outings.
To see what we are doing this year, have a look at our calendar. Of course you are not expected to turn up to each and every event (or even any event) but it gives you an idea of just how ambitious we are with our programme. And you can also see how much fun you could have as well.
If you want a really detailed overview of the Group go here. This tells you everything you need to know in a special section aimed at parents. Please note, however, leaders do not pay any subscriptions - so ignore that question.
